Sunkissed Livin' // Homestead Update

September 22, 2017

Well we've been in our beautiful new home for about 4 1/2 months now and we have done A LOT! More than I could've imagined we could do in such a short period of time. We've had endless help from our family and couldn't be happier with all our remodeling work! We are definitely sure we will NEVER do this again though! This is our forever home (until we follow our retirement dream of moving to Costa Rica). It's been a heck of a project and so many things have come up that we didn't expect to have to deal with (enter septic/plumbing issues, swimming pool leaking into poolhouse, etc etc...ugh) But we're praying that all that stuff is behind us, and we can focus on what we want to again!

So now we are more focused on the outside! Yay! We have brought some animal friends onto the ranch to join our family and are working on compost piles, regenerating soil, planning the spring garden, keeping our chickens healthy so they can start laying soon, pruning trees, planting fruit trees and flowers and putting up fencing.

I thought I'd share some photos of what life has been looking like over here on Rancho Trujillo lately. The weather has cooled down and we are loving being able to work outside and not drown in our own sweat. It's also nice to let Jude run around outside without worrying about him getting too hot! Hallelujah for fall time approaching.

We have 5 chickies and 1 rooster, they are still young and not laying but should be getting there soon! We have a compost pile in their run where we through hay, grass clippings, weeds and all our food scraps so they are earning their keep by working that pile for us! Last week, on a whim, we went and bought two mama sheep and two baby sheep that were only two weeks old! They are Katahdin mixes and are just so beautiful and fun to watch! One of the sheep is pregnant, so we will have one or two more babies here in another month or so! They have really eaten up a lot of the weeds and tall grass in our corral and seem to be liking it here on our ranch so far.

Just recently we started planning the garden for next spring! (The picture above is me drawing out the layout for it.) We bought some awesome 7 foot pallets (another craigslist win) and will be making the garden fence with those. We've been working on composting since we moved in and are already getting some dark, rich soil harvested from the first pile we started! I'm hoping to not have to buy any compost, but be able to create all our soil here on the homestead. It's a lot of work keeping those piles hot, watering them, turning them and adding to them- but I love doing it and seeing the awesome results!

We've just been having such a blast getting to know our animals and playing with them, watching Jude run around and play in the dirt, and dreaming and planning all our goals for our little urban homestead. Everyday I'm still so humbled by all that God has brought into our lives and this place that we get to call OUR OWN! This past year has been the hardest and most exciting I've ever experienced. Getting to meet our son 13 months ago was incredible and watching him grow has been the most amazing experience. We had a lot of struggles the first few months after he was born but now he is flourishing and I am healing from the emotional trauma I experienced. We lost loved ones, have loved ones with cancer, watched family members marry & move away, welcomed new babies into our extended family, bought our first house, packed & moved, remodeled a house and watched our boy turn one. I'm hoping this next year is a little less eventful and a little more peaceful.

Eddie and I love walking out to the back field at sunset, watching the pink, blue, purple tie dye sky and feeling so happy and content with where we're at & where we're going. I've always felt God's presence in the breeze and on our property you can ALWAYS feel a breeze, so I feel His hugs and love all the time. I can't wait to show you all the progress as we continue along this journey!

"In this you greatly rejoice, though for now for a little while you may have had to suffer various trials, so that the authenticity of your faith - more precious than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ..."
1 Peter 1:6-7

Until next time. xoxo
